We had another great meeting on Thursday, this time at Marion Technical Institute in Ocala! Kim Burt, the I.T. Instructor at MTI, invited our group to see the school’s I.T. academy and sit down to lunch with some of the students to give them a chance to talk with I.T. people who had experience in the field.
I and the other members were very impressed with the students we talked to and the projects they were working on. We went on a tour of their classroom where we saw different groups working on projects ranging from networking and remote desktop operations to the design of online and mobile applications. I could see the enthusiasm for technology in the room and it was great to see this kind of quality technical education happening right here in Ocala.
Marion Technical Institute serves Ocala and Marion County and offers vocational training an a variety of fields including Automotive, Culinary Arts, Law and Business and Finance. Their I.T. Academy trains students to obtain certifications including the A+ / Network + and Microsoft Office Specialist certs and focuses on preparing them for later college and career choices in their chosen field. The State of Florida also pays for the students to take the certification tests as part of the course.
Some of these students already have an idea of what area of I.T. they want to focus on as we found out during the luncheon portion of the meeting. MTI also has a great Culinary Arts program, judging by their food, and they prepared lunches for our group so we could sit down and share some of our experiences with the students. We had a really good discussion with the students and I was grateful to those of our members who were able to attend for sharing their stories and experiences.
I’m looking forward to more opportunities to work with MTI and CTAE as we did earlier this week. Again, thanks to our members who were able to make it and to Kim Burt and the staff and students of MTI for hosting us.
